The History of the Glenwood
H&L, E&H, Co., Inc
1927-1936
During the construction in 1927, a temporary firehouse
was built and used on the Stern's farm on Grove Street.
On June 26, 1929, the new firehouse was opened and dedicated with a
parade and ceremonies, with many visiting departments participating in
the gala event. There is no doubt that without the benevolence and counsel
of Mr. Stern, the new firehouse would never have come to fruition. To
recognize his contributions to the Company. the title of Honorary Chief
was bestowed upon Mr. Stern. To this day, this title has never been awarded
to anyone else.
One of the driving forces for the construction of the new firehouse
was Peter A. Hesse. On January 9. 1929, Mr. Hesse, who was then the President
of the Company, passed away suddenly. At the time of his death, President
Heese had served the Company for two years as its President.
During the years of the Great Depression -1929 to 1934, the company
gave generously of its funds, and many of the members served on the local
relief committees.
The fire district increased once more in size during the 1930's, with
the addition of an area of Old Brookville. To provide better protection
to this area, a fire engine was housed, through the generosity of Mr.
Al Brown, Sr., in a cedar garage on his property located on Cedar Swamp
Road, just north of Glen Head Road.
An emergency crew was organized in 1932, a precursor to the emergency
medical services provided by the Company today.
