The History of the Glenwood
H&L, E&H, Co., Inc
1947-1956
In the early 1950's the company began to search for a parcel
of land for the purpose of erecting an annex in the area east of the
railroad tracks. Through the generosity of Glenwood American Legion Post
336 and Mr. Francis Gaynor, a piece of property adjacent to the Legion's
property was donated to the fire company for the purpose of erecting
the annex. In 1952, the building, capable of housing three pieces of
apparatus was completed and dedicated.
In its infancy, the emergency crew
provided basic first aid and transportation to the local hospital.
Training in "First Aid" has
always been an essential part of the training of all the members of the
fire company. Wood Gaylor organized the first "First Aid" crews and became
the first Captain. Since that time many members have carried on that
fine tradition -James Knight; Frank Kopyta, Jr. and Neil Caggiano to
name but a few. Today, our medical technicians can provide on-scene advanced
life support treatment from minor emergencies, heart attacks and to the
critically injured in accidents. Since its inception in 1932, the emergency
crews have saved countless numbers of lives, whether it is a member or
his/her family. neighbor, friend or total stranger.
